That's not water or snow, it's the salt flats in the southern portion of Death Valley.

Tourists walking out to the middle of the salt flats. They looked like fisherman going out to do some ice fishing; but it was 99 degrees when we were there. A Ranger we talked to said it is over 130 degrees here in the summer.

There are some great loop drives in the parks' canyons. Note to self: next time you decide to do this, buy a jeep.
